The proportion of UK adults who have a large amount of concern about their debts has increased during the past quarter, new figures indicate.

According to the MoneyExpert.com Debt Index for the second quarter, 11 per cent of people are "very concerned" about owing money, up from seven per cent who were worried three months ago.

Sean Gardner, chief executive of MoneyExpert.com, said that it is likely the number of people concerned about debt will grow as the Christmas season approaches.

"Anyone who is worried that they are struggling to keep on top of their debts is heading for serious trouble if they do not take action now. It's not too late to sort out your problems before Christmas arrives," he remarked.

Mr Gardner added that "there are many ways for people to get their finances under control", including debt consolidation and budgeting.

His comments echo those from the Consumer Credit Counselling Service, which recently cautioned consumers to keep their spending reined in during the holidays.
